Maid cafes have become on of Tokyo’s most famous attractions. If you’ve spent any time researching things to do in the city, you’ve almost certainly come across them.
While you’ll find traditional maid cafes all over Japan, Tokyo is also has a couple of male maid cafes!
Instead of young women, these cafes are staffed by young men dressed in everything from classic maid uniforms to gothic dresses. Online, you’ll often see them referred to as femboy cafes, while in Japan they’re associated with something called otokonoko culture.

1. Otoko no Ko Cafe & Bar NewType
If you want to visit a male cafe while in Tokyo, make it NEWTYPE.
Located in Akihabara, It’s THE stand-out example of a femboy cafe. Instead of maids, you’ll be welcomed by a cast of cute young men dressed in full maid uniforms, ready to greet you at the door with a “Welcome home, Master!”
期待されること
The experience itself isn’t that different from a regular maid cafe. You’ll be greeted at the door, served food and drinks, chat with the staff, and be encouraged to relax.

Not every maid cafe is all pink hearts and cute catchphrases!
Black Magic, known as Mahokake, goes in the complete opposite direction. Located in Ikebukuro, it’s a femboy cafe with an extra twist: it operates on the idea that the goth femboys serving you were cursed to be girls! So if you like a little bit of roleplaying with your server, this might be the place for you.

メイド喫茶のダーク版、ブラックマジックは、キャストも店内も「セクシーなドラキュラ、でもフェムボーイ」な雰囲気で、独特のゴスロリ感がある。フェミニンな男性、キュートな衣装、でもダークなエッジが好きな人にはお勧めの店だ。

ミッドナイト・エスケープ
It wouldn’t be much of a guide to Tokyo’s best femboy cafes if we didn’t include at least one place in 新宿二丁目, Japan’s biggest gay neighborhood.
Packed with bars in nightlife, Nichome is the perfect place for concept cafes that fit perfectly into the atmosphere. Midnight escape is one of them.
Calling it a normal maid cafe wouldn’t be quite accurate, but if you’re looking for cute staff, good conversation, and an evening that feels unique, it definitely deserves a visit.
