Best Japanese Lesbian Movies

Japanese lesbian cinema does not follow one formula. These four films range from quiet, introspective romance to dark psychological drama.

Love My Life

Two women lying close together with their faces touching, appearing about to kiss.
Amazon Prime JP
  • Year: 2006
  • Format: Movie, approximately 95 minutes
  • Tone: Coming-of-age romance/ family drama
  • Representation: Central lesbian couple
  • 最适合: Queer family, coming-out and identity themes
  • 观看地点 ABEMA (Japan), PrimeVideo

Love My Life follows Ichiko and Eri, a young couple whose relationship is tested when Ichiko decides to come out to her father. The film puts queer identity and family relationships at the centre of its story.

Its focus is not simply on whether two women will get together. It also looks at what coming out can mean within a family, making it a useful choice for viewers interested in queer family dynamics.

蓝色

Two schoolgirls in uniform facing each other closely in bright sunlight.
IMDB
  • Year: 2002
  • Format: Movie, 116 minutes
  • Tone: Quiet coming-of-age drama
  • Representation: Attraction and romance between female classmates
  • 最适合: Slow, introspective and melancholic queer cinema
  • 观看地点 No current streaming service confirmed

蓝色 is a much quieter option. The film follows an introverted schoolgirl who develops feelings for a female classmate in a seaside town.

Its appeal lies in its restraint. The relationship develops through adolescence, uncertainty and small emotional shifts rather than the heightened drama found in many modern television romances.

For viewers who prefer contemplative films, 蓝色 offers something quite different from a conventional GL drama.

西部 西北部

Two women reclining closely together on a bed, with one looking up at the camera.
gagaOOlala
  • Year: 2015 production/ Japanese theatrical release 2018
  • Format: Movie, 102 minutes
  • Tone: Slow character drama/ romance
  • Representation: Lesbian protagonist and relationship between women
  • 最适合: Contemplative, cross-cultural queer drama
  • 观看地点 No current streaming service confirmed

西部 西北部 follows Kei and her girlfriend Ai, alongside Naima, an Iranian Muslim student. Their relationships bring together questions of nationality, religion, culture, and belonging.

Sexuality is important, but it sits alongside other parts of the characters’ lives. This makes the film a good choice for viewers who want a slower character drama, rather than a straightforward romance.

乘车或死亡

Two women sit closely together wrapped in a blanket, one resting against the other as they embrace in warm evening light.
Netflix
  • Year: 2021
  • Format: Movie, approximately 142 minutes
  • Tone: Psychological thriller/ road drama
  • Representation: Explicit lesbian protagonist
  • 最适合: Dark, intense queer drama
  • 观看地点 Netflix (Japan and other supported territories)
  • Content note: Domestic violence, murder, sexual content, abusive, and emotionally manipulative relationship dynamics

乘车或死亡 is the darkest film on this list. Rei kills the abusive husband of Nanae, the woman she has loved for years. The two then flee together.

The relationship is at the centre of a story about obsession, dependency, sacrifice, and escape. It is not a comforting romance, and the film does not offer the easy emotional journey that some viewers may expect from a lesbian love story.

If you want a warm GL romance, start with one of the series below. However, if you are looking for something much more intense, 乘车或死亡 brings lesbian desire, violence, and dependency into a psychological thriller.

Best Japanese Lesbian & GL Series

These six series move from gentle domestic romance to workplace melodrama, mystery, and complicated adult relationships.

她喜欢烹饪,也喜欢吃

Two women sit together outside, one eating a sandwich and the other drinking a coffee.
Amazon Prime JP
  • Year: 2022-2024
  • Format: Series, 2 seasons/ 30 short episodes
  • Tone: Warm slice-of-life romance
  • Representation: A woman realizing she is lesbian
  • 最适合: Gentle adult slow-burn romance and domestic intimacy
  • 观看地点 NHK 点播 (Japan)

她喜欢烹饪,也喜欢吃 is a natural starting point for viewers who want something warm and unhurried.

Nomoto loves cooking. Kasuga loves eating. Their relationship develops through shared meals and everyday routines. What begins as a simple connection gradually becomes something more.

The series makes Nomoto’s growing understanding of her sexuality explicit. NHK’s own material describes her realising that she is lesbian and that she is in love with Kasuga.

There is less emphasis on dramatic twists and more on the small moments where a relationship grows.

Chaser Game W

Two women posing closely together against a vivid red background.
www.hominis.media
  • Year: 2024
  • Format: Series, 2 seasons/ 16 episodes
  • Tone: Workplace romance/ melodrama
  • Representation: Officially framed as a lesbian drama
  • 最适合: Complicated exes, workplace tension and high drama
  • 观看地点 GagaOOLala in supported territories
  • Content note: Workplace harassment and power imbalance, closetedness, marital conflict and emotionally aggressive relationship dynamics

Chaser Game W takes the workplace romance in a much more dramatic direction.

Itsuki is forced back into close professional contact with Fuyu, her university ex-girlfriend. Their unresolved relationship becomes tangled up with work, resentment, and power dynamics.

TV Tokyo explicitly described the series as a lesbian drama and says the scripts were developed with lesbian supervision.

Choose Chaser Game W if you want conflict, complicated exes, and workplace melodrama. For something lighter, Ayaka Is in Love with Hiroko! takes a very different approach.

Ayaka Is in Love with Hiroko!

Two women stand closely together in warm light, one gently holding the other’s face as they look into each other’s eyes.
gagaOOlala
  • Year: 2024 – 2025
  • Format: Series, 2 seasons/ 14 episodes
  • Tone: Office romantic comedy
  • Representation: Officially marketed as girls’ love/ GL
  • 最适合: Light workplace romance and overt romantic pursuit
  • 观看地点 GagaOOLala in supported territories

Ayaka openly pursues her senior colleague Hiroko. Hiroko, meanwhile, misunderstands the situation while trying to suppress her own feelings. The result is a comedy built around two women who are attracted to each other but are not reading the situation in quite the same way.

The second season, released as Ayaka Is in Love with Hiroko! 2nd Stage, continues their story rather than starting a completely separate romance.

Pick this one if you want comedy, mutual attraction, and a more openly romantic GL setup.

Call Me by No-Name

Two women hold hands while walking through a sunlit park, one in a pink sweater looking toward the other, who smiles while leading her forward.
www.themoviedb.org
  • Year: 2025
  • Format: Series, 8 episodes
  • Tone: Girls’ love mystery/ psychological romance
  • Representation: Officially marketed as girls’ love
  • 最适合: GL with a mystery at its centre
  • 观看地点 FOD (Japan)
  • Content note: Psychological distress and unsettling relationship dynamics

Call Me by No-Name combines a GL relationship with a psychological mystery.

University student Megumi Yotsugi meets the enigmatic Kotoha Furuhashi. Their relationship comes with a strange condition involving Megumi discovering Kotoha’s real name.

The mystery is not simply something happening alongside the romance. It is part of how the relationship works, giving the series a different structure from a conventional GL love story.

Even Though We’re Adults

Two women pose closely together against a soft pink background, one with long dark hair and the other with a short bob haircut.
IMDB
  • Year: 2025
  • Format: Series, 12 episodes
  • Tone: Mature relationship drama
  • Representation: Central romantic relationship between women
  • 最适合: Messy adult relationships and morally complicated choices
  • 观看地点 Hulu (Japan)
  • Content note: Infidelity, marital conflict, and emotionally difficult relationship decisions

Ayano is a married elementary-school teacher. She meets Akari at a dining bar, and their attraction begins to disrupt the life Ayano has already built.

Even Though We’re Adults moves away from the simpler question of whether two people will fall in love. The attraction is there; the difficulty is deciding what to do about it when marriage and existing commitments are already part of the picture.

Choose this one if you want an adult relationship drama where following your feelings has consequences for more than just the couple.

中转女孩

Two women lying in bed under white sheets, smiling with their faces close together.
FUJITV
  • Year: 2015
  • Format: Series, 8 episodes
  • Tone: Romantic drama/ GL
  • Representation: Official girls’ love framing
  • 最适合: Earlier Japanese GL television
  • 观看地点 FOD (Japan)
  • Content note: Stepsister romance, family conflict and an 18/21 central pairing

Sayuri is 18, and Yui is 21. They become stepsisters when their parents marry and begin living under the same roof. They later develop romantic feelings for each other.

Fuji TV explicitly described the series as a girls’ love story. It is an early example of a mainstream Japanese television drama that put a relationship between women at its centre.

For readers interested in the development of Japanese GL television, it provides useful context. For anyone uncomfortable with a stepsister romance, it is an easy one to skip.

Coming in September 2026: How Do We Relationship?

Two women smile with their eyes closed as they lean their heads together outdoors, one with long light hair and the other with a short dark bob.
www.animenewsnetwork.com

One new Japanese GL series is arriving too late to assess as part of this list.

How Do We Relationship? (付き合ってあげてもいいかな) premieres in Japan on 10 September 2026. MBS describes it as an adaptation of a popular GL manga following university students Miwa and Saeko, who meet through a music circle, discover that they both like women and begin dating.

It is a title to watch out for, though it is too early to call it one of the best before it has aired.

Announced viewing options include FOD in Japan, GagaOOLala worldwide except Japan and Korea和 FriDay in Taiwan, with one-week catch-up viewing on TVer after MBS broadcasts.
