If there’s anything that the LGBTQ+ community loves, it’s a chance to strut its stuff! Whether it be dominating the room in karaoke, or showing off the freshest fit that has ever been seen, Japan’s queer family relishes showing off their best and brightest. And as luck would have it, there is a pageant for the hunkiest fella in all of the islands of Japan! So let’s take you through it: who is Mr. Gay Japan? And how does one become the man of men?
What is Mr Gay Japan?

Mr Gay Japan is a pageant that not only showcases some of the Land of the Rising Sun’s sexiest hunks, but is also a way to promote LGBTQ+ culture, as well as the concept of marriage equality. It aims to showcase both talented and buff dudes and their progressive views. An excellent mission that anyone with half a heart would support.
History and Development of Mr Gay Japan

Mr Gay Japan started in 2018, but quickly gained a reputation among the LGBTQ+ community for its dedication to equality, as well as its desire to spread awareness of LGBTQ+ rights, and especially to promote marriage equality in Japan, which remains unlawful as of the time of writing.
Many of the winners have been motivated by their personal struggles, and are keen to move the political landscspe in Japan to be more amenableto LGBTQ+ people.
The Winner’s Role and Responsibilities

The winner of the competition, the new Mr. Gay Japan, in addition to being held up as a symbol of queer masculinity, is also a new national figure for LGBTQ+ causes. At the time of writing, because marriage equality is not the law of the land in Japan, the winner is expected to promote the recognition of same-gender marriages in Japan.
Additionally, the winner is expected to co-ordinate with his equivalents in other countries, such as Mr. Gay Thailand, as an example, in order to maintain international solidarity and co-operation.
