On the 4th of July 2026, as Americans were celebrating their independence from Great Britain, lesbians were celebrating something far more important. It was that fateful Saturday that saw the premiere of the trailer for the anime adaptation of The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy At All (better known as Green Yuri) and confirmed a release date and platform: January 2027 on Crunchyroll. Then, on 8 October 2026, International Lesbian Day, we got two great green gifts: a brand new trailer, and an exact release date: 8 January 2027!
The verdant teaser quickly went viral in sapphic spaces, and suitably so — and the new October trailer is pushing anticipation to new heights! But what else do we know about this eagerly awaited anime? Here’s the confirmed release information, cast, production team and more.
When Does the Green Yuri Anime Come Out? Where Can You Watch It?
The New Year is the biggest holiday in Japan, and we’re getting such a terrific gift in the form of arguably the most anticipated yuri anime in years. Arriving only one week into 2027, yuri fans don’t have long to wait for this emerald entry into the genre, as it will air on 8 January at 11pm Japan Standard Time.
As for where to watch it, anime streaming service Crunchyroll has confirmed that it will be streaming the show when it premieres, and that it will be subtitled in English. The current announcements do not say whether episodes will be simulcast, which territories will be covered, or whether an English dub will be ready at launch.
Those of us in Japan were also given a bonus International Lesbian Day gift. The official broadcaster was announced to be Nippon Television as part of its FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT programming.
What Is Green Yuri About?
Mitsuki Koga is a quiet high school girl who keeps herself to herself in class. Her first love is music, and she works part-time at her uncle’s record store. There, she can mask up, wear the more boyish, dark-colored clothes that she prefers, and listen to all the music she wants.
She’s not the only music fan in town, though. Her classmate, the outgoing gyaru-styled Aya Osawa, often visits the shop because her tastes are less K-Pop and more classic rock. She has another motive, though: she has a crush on Mitsuki, because in her more relaxed fit, she looks like a handsome dude! Mitsuki, who recognizes Aya, now walks a thin line so as not to hurt Aya’s feelings or embarrass her. But as they get closer at school and at the store, will their new friendship turn into something more?
The manga became famous for its distinctive green coloring, and readers fell in love with both the story’s conceit, the charming and relatable characters, and the way music brings the two leads closer. And as mentioned, the manga’s title, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy At All, is a very fine summary of the story…but it doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. That’s why fans in the West call it by its affectionate nickname, Green Yuri: and that’s exactly what we’ll be doing.

We know it’s frustrating waiting for the show to start, but in the meantime… why not rewatch that gorgeous teaser and the shiny new trailer?
Those with sharp ears will have noticed that the trailer is set to “Breed” by Nirvana. That’s not just trailer music: “Breed” is the anime’s opening theme song.
The choice is incredibly apt. Nirvana is the very first band mentioned in the manga, appearing on just the second page, so bringing the band into the anime gives the adaptation an immediate musical connection to its source material.
