Unexpectedly Naughty Fukami: Yaoi Anime Review

Tobias Waters

Sadly, 2025 has been a little less than a banner year for gay anime, with The Summer Hikaru Died being the exception as a real stand-out. However, one show that has flown somewhat under the radar — perhaps due to its subject matter, as we’ll see — in Unexpectedly Naughty Fukami (ă‚„ăŸă‚‰ă‚„ă‚‰ă—ă„æ·±èŠ‹ăă‚“/ Yatara Yarashii Fukami-kun).

At just eight episodes, and each being a mere six minutes each, it may seem like a lightweight affair. But trust us, you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck with this VERY 18+ anime. Beware minor spoilers!

Premise

The premise is simple, but fun. Our protagonist, Akihiro Kaji, is a handsome, successful salesman in a major company. Considered to be “perfect” by those around him — and he couldn’t agree more. Having long since realized (or, perhaps, resigned himself to the idea) that one can have a healthy sex life without romance, he finds himself frustrated by the men he finds on dating apps, and rates them in his head (and in his phone, if he gets their number) by percentages.

So, when the (self described) 100% rated Kaji is sent on an overnight business trip with the 0% rated Yu Fukami, who is sullen, shabby, and uninteresting, our hero doesn’t expect much. But after seeing him step out of the shower without his glasses, glistening with water droplets, and discovering that Fukami is also gay, the two share a night of passion, and agree to become friends with benefits, Fukami has one condition, however: Kaji cannot fall in love with him.

Expect Naughtiness

One thing that needs to be made clear right at the start is: Unexpectedly Naughty Fukami is very raunchy. The reason this one has the title “yaoi anime,” rather than our typical “BL anime” is because this work is very explicit, from the first episode and in every episode after that.

The episodes follow the typical format of Kaji experiencing some dilemma or concern, resolving it through Fukami, and the two then having sex before the episode concludes with a resolution (in every episode but two). The sex is usually different in one form or another, as well: this is not just good for variety for the viewer, but helps express the feelings of the characters, in much the same way that cocktails function in Bartender.

One example is in episode five, where Kaji — frustrated that Fukami, as a power bottom, is always dictating how their sex goes — binds his lover’s hands and insists that he be in the dominant role just once. Fukami is initially reluctant, but soon consents. It’s quick, but it’s nice to see the concept of consent for kinky sex being acknowledged and shown. Later, Fukami even asks to be tied up, demonstrating the growth of his trust in Kaji.

Kaji’s dirty talk is also a lot of fun, though sometimes the subtitles can come off as a little bit too
online (I confess to laughing out loud when Kaji met Fukami’s cute protests by replying “you always cum from being reamed”).

Unexpected Changes

The joy of the show (aside from the raunch, of course) is seeing Kaji slowly transform from a shallow narcissistic playboy into someone who surrenders to the feelings that he develops for Fukami.

His percentage ratings system, which he uses for everyone that he meets (including one poor soul who tries to do Kaji a favor and is deemed a “Negative 500 million percent”) slowly falls away as the series goes on — and is abandoned completely after an old flame discovers the system by chance and reads Kaji to filth.

There are also a number of sweet moments that show the pair getting closer: such as their revealing one another’s forenames; Fukami revealing that he develops games as a hobby, and Kaji being genuinely interested; or Kaji becoming envious when Fukami shows up to work without glasses and with a fresh haircut and gets fawned over.

These moments of cuteness are tempered by times when the two have difficulties. As he develops deeper feelings for Fukami, Kaji pulls away, and at one point their relationship looks to break down entirely.

Sound and Visuals

The animation is, for the most part, solid, with the majority of the budget seeming to have gone (understandably) on the sex scenes, which are explicit and erotic. The variety of sex on display, as mentioned, also stops them from becoming repetitive for the viewer, and the sound effects add to the appeal.

The score is broadly fine, with the light piano during sex scenes sometimes giving a slightly funny AV vibe. The ED song is not much to write home about, but it’s largely inoffensive, and the ED animation is minimalist but sweet.

Conclusion

This is definitely a NSFW anime: at least one third of each episode is explicit yaoi hentai. However, if you’re looking to be titillated while enjoying a romance blossom in under an hour, then we expect you’ll get more than 0% satisfaction from Unexpectedly Naughty Fukami.
