24 Kaikan: Guide to Tokyo’s Most Famous Gay Sauna

Tobias Waters

For a lot of gay men visiting Japan, there is a big question that they want answered: where can I go to be among my people? How can I find dudes who are into what I’m into? And where can I get an incredible wash?

Well, lucky for you, there is a place to go for all of these in Tokyo’s gayborhood of Shinjuku Nichome: 24 Kaikan. This is a gay sauna that has outposts across Tokyo, but the Shinjuku main branch is the one that people see as the Mecca of gay sauna in Japan. But what is it like? What can you find there? And who can you find there? Let’s find out!

24 Kaikan Overview

24 Kaikan is, as the name suggests, a 24-hour sauna, catering exclusively to men, with an obvious focus on gay men. Straight men are welcome too, of course, (as are… “straight” men) but be aware: this is an openly erotic gay locale. If you are just in the mood for a dip or a shvitz, then you might want to head to your local onsen or sento: this place is for men who are looking for fun.

But if it’s fun you’re looking for, then look no further. This is not just a major landmark in Shinjuku Nichome, but a great spot for…brief meetings. But what is it like inside? What will you see, and what kind of… sauna can you enter?

What to Expect at 24 Kaikan Shinjuku

The main Shinjuku branch of 24 Kaikan Shinjuku is, in many senses, the Disneyland of gay sauna. It is made up of eight floors — though the first is for parking, the second for the reception and getting into your birthday suit. The upper six floors offer a range of baths, sauna, showers, video rooms, tanning rooms, and private rooms.

Within larger rooms and private rooms, you will find materials and items to help one fulfill what needs or desires one has, with few restrictions. However, while condoms are free, one will be required to pay extra for certain extras: whips don’t pay for themselves, after all.

Atmosphere of 24 Kaikan

The atmosphere is generally convivial, though, again, this is not the place for a bath and a conversation. The men here are here for recreation, rather than respite or refreshment. That being said, one need not necessarily get involved, should one prefer to watch.

However, respect and consent are vital. One may find that one is propositioned by a guest, but if one refuses, then it is expected that the thwarted potential beau will move on. Similarly, if a fella takes one’s eye, and they refuse any advances, it is expected that one moves on. In the event that badgering continues, one should move on: there are plenty more fish in the sauna.

🔞 Note: 24 Kaikan is an adult-only venue (18+).

Pricing and Admission of 24 Kaikan Shinjuku

The price of admission between 5am and 9pm is ¥3,300, and grants a 12-hour stay. Between 9pm and 5am, the charge is ¥3,900, but you can stay for 14 hours. Every hour past your limit is an extra ¥500.

Other 24 Kaikan Locations in Tokyo
